Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We've got answers. If you don't see what you need, reach out , we're here to help.

Why do I have to pay taxes and fees for commercial flights?

Airline taxes and fees are mandatory government charges that cannot be waived or donated. They must be paid at the time of booking. These include TSA security fees, federal excise taxes and airport facility charges. These typically total $25-$55 per person each way. We cover the actual cost of your flight ticket (which is the largest expense), but these government-required fees must be paid by the passenger. We keep these costs as low as possible by booking the most economical flights available.

Who can be my companion?

Your companion can be a spouse or partner, family member (adult child, parent or sibling), friend, professional caregiver or anyone you designate to provide support. There's no requirement for the relationship. Just let us know who will be traveling with you.

Who are the Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic volunteer pilots?

Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic volunteer pilots are FAA-certified pilots who donate their time, aircraft and fuel to fly patients to medical care. Many are retired commercial airline pilots, retired military pilots, experienced private pilots with 500+ hours and aviation professionals with a passion for helping others. All pilots must meet strict requirements including minimum flight hours, current medical certifications, appropriate insurance and regular aircraft inspections. Safety is always our top priority. Who qualifies for transportation assistance?

To qualify for Mercy Medical Angels assistance, you need to meet these criteria: Medical necessity (you're traveling for medical diagnosis, treatment or follow-up care); Financial need (your household income is at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines based on household size); Distance requirement (your medical facility is outside your local area, typically 50+ miles one-way); Ambulatory status (you can sit upright with a seatbelt and walk with minimal assistance); and Advance notice (minimum of 7-10 days before your appointment, up to 45 days in advance). If you're unsure whether you qualify, submit a request anyway. Our team will determine your eligibility and guide you through the process. View Eligibility Information

What types of transportation assistance do you offer?

We provide three types of transportation assistance. You don't need to choose a method. Our team will determine the best option based on your distance, medical needs, timeline and availability. Ground Transportation  (for over 100 miles total travel in a month ) includes Uber or Lyft vouchers for door-to-door service (over 30 miles round trip), gas cards if you or a friend/family member can drive and train or bus tickets for regional travel. This is completely free with no out-of-pocket cost. Private Pilot Flights through Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic (for trips typically between 200-475 miles, sometimes up to 1,000 miles) are provided by volunteer pilots in small private aircraft serving 11 states: Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Delaware, Michigan, Ohio and Washington, D.C. This is completely free and requires medical clearance (must be able to sit upright with no medical care needed during flight). Commercial Airline Flights (for trips over 475 miles) are tickets booked on major airlines. Mercy Medical Angels covers the ticket price, and you pay only airline taxes and fees (typically $25-$50 each way). This is suitable for patients with more complex medical needs. After reviewing your request, we'll contact you to explain which option best fits your situation and walk you through the next steps.

What is a volunteer pilot flight like?

Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic volunteer pilot flights are safe, comfortable and flown by experienced pilots who donate their time and aircraft. The aircraft are small private planes (typically 2-6 passengers), climate controlled and comfortable, and fly at lower altitudes than commercial airlines. You'll meet your pilot at a small local airport (not a major commercial airport). Flights are smooth and personal, and your pilot will explain everything. Flight time varies but is usually faster than driving. All pilots are FAA-certified with extensive experience. Aircraft are regularly inspected and maintained, and flights operate in safe weather conditions only. Many patients tell us that volunteer pilot flights are a highlight of their medical journey. It's a chance to see a compassionate side of humanity during a difficult time.

Pilots must carry a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance, with no less than $100,000 per seat, on any aircraft used for Angel Flights. An instrument rating (IFR) is strongly encouraged but not required for all missions.
