Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic pilots don’t just log miles — they make medical care possible. If you’re a seasoned aviator with a passion for giving back, here’s what it takes to get cleared for takeoff.
What You’ll Need to Fly Missions
We work with experienced, safety-conscious pilots who are ready to put their skills to meaningful use. To join our roster and begin flying, here’s what’s needed. If you don't meet all these requirements yet - still register to join and get paired with an experienced Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic Pilot!
Flight Time
- At least 500 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC)
- If you fly turbine aircraft: 1,000 hours PIC, including 100 turbine hours and 50 in make and model
- For all other aircraft: 50 hours in make and model
Insurance Requirements
Leave a legacy that ensures patients always have a way to reach care.
Ways to Give:
- $1 million minimum liability coverage
- At least $100,000 per seat
Certificates & Ratings
- A current FAA medical certificate
- A valid flight review
- An instrument rating
Aircraft Requirements
- Properly registered, licensed and airworthy
- Engine time within TBO, per manufacturer guidelines (recommended)
Recent Flight Experience
- Logged 50 hours as PIC in the past 12 months — or —12 hours in the past 90 days
- If you’re close: 2 hours of dual instruction with a CFI brings you current





What to Expect
The Onboarding Process
An Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic coordinator will reach out to you once your application is recieved and answer any questions you may have.

Submit a Pilot Application
Expect a response from our team within 24–48m business hours. We’ll verify your credentials and confirm next steps.

Attend Briefing
You’ll be scheduled for a virtual onboarding session — a live group briefing held monthly that covers expectations, procedures and Q&A for interested or registered pilots.

Complete Training
You’ll take a one-hour online training to cover protocols, dispatch procedures, and patient interactions. It’s built to be efficient, not elementary.

Choose Your Missions
Once cleared, you’ll be added to the mission roster. Flights are matched to your aircraft, schedule, and preferences. You choose what and when to fly — every mission is optional.

Fuel Assistance for Pilots
Thanks to an FAA exemption, volunteer pilots can receive reimbursement for fuel costs on charitable patient flights. Participation is completely voluntary.
