Ahziel was just a baby when his mother, Adriana, noticed he wasn't having any bowel movements. Adriana rushed her son to the hospital, where tests were performed.
The results came back with bad news: Ahziel had Hirschsprung's disease. In simple terms - his large intestine didn't have enough nerve cells in it to make him have a bowel movement, causing fecal material to get stuck. The only way to correct it is an extensive surgery.
Adriana had to make some tough choices. She had to take Ahziel to his innumerable medical appointments, but that meant she had to call out of work. Her income was already low, without the fact that she was missing hours.
Ahziel's health was only getting worse, and he would need surgery soon. But the best surgeon was hundreds of miles away, in another state. The family's finances were sliding downward. How were they supposed to get there?
That was when Adriana found out about Mercy Medical Angels. She applied, and was approved. Mercy Medical Angels arranged and paid for Ahziel to fly on United. Adriana was able to accompany him. It renewed her hope - hope for her son to have a healthier life and a brighter future.
Ahziel recently celebrated his second birthday. Thanks to Mercy Medical Angels, he has many more celebrations to look forward to.
