Stories from Grateful Patients: Vicki

March 27, 2025

In Her Own Words...

"Hi, my name is Vicki. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii.  In 2024, my doctor referred me to a neurologist on Oahu, who discovered a dural fistula in my brain. The neurologist did an embolization and got rid of it. But I needed follow-ups in 2025 to see if the problem had returned or not."

"I used to work full time. My job involved helping people with disabilities. I retired recently, and picked up a modest income with part time work and Social Security.  But when I went on Medicare, they no longer covered any travel assistance between the islands. This was a problem because the specialist I needed to see was on Oahu and I was on the Big Island."

"That was when I heard about Mercy Medical Angels. They covered most of the airfare and also generously gave me two Uber vouchers. Everyone that helped me with this process for travel assistance was very friendly and respectful. They even made me feel good about asking for help - that isn't always easy for me! If it weren't for Mercy Medical Angels, I would have had to go without other necessities to access medical care."

"The follow-ups happened, and all is well in my brain for the time being. Thank you, Mercy Medical Angels!"
