In 2023, Derrick was in great shape. His career was on the rise, and life was good. All of this changed when he ended up in a minor car collision. However, the effects of the collision were anything but minor.
"I fell hard," said Derrick, "and ended up with vestibular neuritis and breathing problems."
Vestibular neuritis is a disorder of the inner ear. The inner ear plays a large role in balance and stability. When that doesn't work as it should, a host of conditions can result. A few of these include vertigo, chronic nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Vestibular neuritis can also lead to an increased fall risk.
The breathing problems were a result of pectus excavatum. This is also known as "sunken chest." In other words, Derrick was born with his sternum upside-down, deforming his chest as he grew. It hadn't affected him too much before. But after the collision, it was harder to manage his symptoms.
Derrick had needed a Nuss procedure for a long time. This would correct the position of his sternum and make it easier for him to breathe. However, very few surgeons have the training to conduct a Nuss procedure on adults. Needless to say, this put an obstacle in Derrick's plans.
"There are far too few surgeons who can do this operation," said Derrick, "meaning I had to travel more than 600 miles." However, the medical bills were adding up quickly. Traveling for such a long distance wasn't feasible. How would he receive the life-changing operation?
That was when Derrick found out about Mercy Medical Angels. Mercy Medical Angels teamed up with American Airlines to provide charitable flights to care. That 600 mile distance - and the cost - weren't the impossible struggles they once seemed to be.
"The team at Mercy Medical Angels made this much less stressful," said Derrick. "My flights on American Airlines were great. Everyone was so helpful."
In early 2024, Derrick's life changed once again. But this time, it was for the better. He finally received the Nuss procedure and was able to start treatment for vestibular neuritis.
"I'd been unemployed for a year due to my conditions," said Derrick. "Now I can get back into the workforce, free of so much malady."
"I am thankful for you all. Mercy Medical Angels and American Airlines, you helped me get there. Thank you!"
