Mercy Medical Angels helps Leukemia patient drive to life-saving treatment

Diagnosed With Leukemia

Brett was in his mid-20s, physically active, and working a successful job. Then everything came crashing down. He found out he had a rare form of leukemia.

“It changed my world and my usual lifestyle,” said Brett. “I never thought I would get cancer at such a young age.”

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Brett faced even more setbacks alongside his cancer diagnosis. He had moved away from his family in Wisconsin, and had to move back home for support. “They’ve helped me navigate this life-changing diagnosis and the treatment plan,” said Brett.

In addition to losing his independence, Brett also lost his job. The cancer was draining his energy and causing him extreme pain, which rendered him unable to work. Without a job, he didn’t have much money left. “I have very few financial resources now,” said Brett.

From Roadblocks...

Brett travels more than 100 miles – just going one way – from his family’s home to a hospital in Milwaukee. His local hospital doesn’t have the resources to treat the rare type of leukemia that he has. “I need to go there so I can receive a specific type of chemotherapy,” said Brett.

Brett said his situation was “overwhelming.” He added, “Extra transportation costs put a strain on my finances.”

...To Relief

That was when Brett found out about Mercy Medical Angels. The nonprofit sent him gas cards so he could drive to and from treatment. The roadblocks he had faced were lifting, one by one.

“The gas cards alleviated my financial worries that came with a devastating illness,” said Brett. “I am very thankful.”

“You Definitely Radiate Goodness...”

Brett’s battle against leukemia isn’t over yet. But he trusts that Mercy Medical Angels will continue to help him – until he emerges triumphant.

“Receiving assistance from Mercy Medical Angels with gas cards has been very helpful,” said Brett. “I appreciate it so much.”

“You definitely radiate goodness and love to others through your wonderful organization. Thank you, Mercy Medical Angels!”
