Kelly: Flying to Victory

February 5, 2021

Meet Kelly

Kelly lives in a small town in Louisiana. She comes from a happy family of seven – herself, her husband, five children, and a grandchild. They don’t have much money to go around, but they have plenty of love. "Times are tough,” said Kelly, “but we make it.”

But the tough times got even tougher in 2017.

High Costs...

Kelly had just finished celebrating her 40th birthday when she found a lump in her breast. She was scheduled for her third mammogram. However, she couldn’t go because she didn’t have insurance. A month later, she found out that she had Stage 2 breast cancer. Kelly needed a mastectomy and chemo, along with reconstruction surgery and routine scans.

However, local doctors could not effectively treat the cancer. They referred her to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. “That’s where the specialist for my type of cancer is,” said Kelly.

Going to the renowned hospital should have solved the problem. But it added another problem. Kelly would have to fly more than 1,400 miles one-way to receive the care she needed, and then fly back home again. A round trip ticket was too expensive.

The costs were high, and Kelly didn’t know how she could cover them. She was running out of resources – and worse, running out of time.

...Higher Hopes

Just when it seemed like Kelly was about to lose the battle, angels flew in for air support – Mercy Medical Angels, that is! “Setting up travel was super-easy,” said Kelly, “and the flight experience was great.”

Fast forward to January 2021. Kelly had since gone through seventeen rounds of chemo, reconstructive surgeries, and countless scans. She needed one more outpatient surgery. After that, she had to go to a post-op appointment.

Once that was complete, Kelly’s hopes went from grounded to soaring. The specialist had two pieces of good news. First, she only had to go to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center once every six months. Second, the cancer was finally in remission!

"Your Help is a Life-Saver!"

When asked what she would say to potential donors, Kelly answers straight from the heart. “I would recommend you to anyone who needs help or wants to donate,” said Kelly. “My flight was great. I couldn’t have gotten to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center without Mercy Medical Angels.”

She adds, “Your help is a life-saver!”

Thanks to Mercy Medical Angels, cancer patients like Kelly can fly to victory.
