Dorothea: Kicking Out Cardiomyopathy

September 21, 2020

Dorothea lives in Palm Harbor, FL. She’s up and kicking, with help from her brother, Paul. Recently, Dorothea needed help for something more serious: treatment for cardiomyopathy.

Kicking Her When She's Down

Cardiomyopathy is a form of heart disease where the cardiac muscles are too weak to pump blood to the rest of the body. Complications can lead to heart failure and even death.

As if this wasn’t enough of a problem, doctors discovered that Dorothea had colon cancer. She was fighting two severe illnesses, and they were kicking her when she was down.

A Distant Victory...

Dorothea’s doctors said that she had to travel to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville for treatment. Driving would last almost 250 miles and four hours on the road, and that was without taking traffic into account.

It would be more convenient for Dorothea to take a flight. However, a commercial airline ticket would also be more expensive - too expensive. Dorothea was running out of resources, and worse, she was running out of time.

...Now Within Reach

Dorothea's hope was starting to run out. Then, at a critical point, Dorothea found out about Mercy Medical Angels. Mercy Medical Angels arranged a round-trip flight, and the Hogan Foundation helped pay for airline tickets. Paul was able to come with her as a caregiver.

The assistance from Mercy Medical Angels and the Hogan Foundation lifted the financial burdens of traveling to distant treatment. This way, Dorothea could focus on healing. Her victory was now within reach.

Kicking Out Her Challenges

When asked how Mercy Medical Angels helped her, Dorothea’s gratitude spills over. “You are caring, compassionate and professional – truly God’s angels working miracles on earth!”

Cardiomyopathy and colon cancer may have double-teamed against Dorothea. But with help from Mercy Medical Angels and the Hogan Foundation, she isn’t going down without a fight!
