Angel Finds His Wings
Meet Angel
Deep in His Bones
Osteogenesis Imperfecta results from a lack of collagen, an essential protein. Collagen forms the main building blocks of muscles, tendons and ligaments, and bones. Individuals with this disease have very fragile bones. Long bones, such as the ones found in the legs and arms, can break from something as mundane as walking.
The condition can be corrected by physical therapy and orthopedic surgery. However, the doctors in Honduras were unable to treat Angel. He would have to fly to the United States, specifically Shriners Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. But the costs of travel were too high. How would Angel access the care he needed?
Help from Above
That was when Elsie found out about Mercy Medical Angels. Through the nonprofit’s partnership with American Airlines, Angel flew to Shriners Hospital for Children to receive the care he needed. Mercy Medical Angels arranged the flights. American Airlines covered the cost of travel.
The surgery involved putting rods in Angel’s leg bones, to add extra support. After that, he went through physical therapy so he could get used to walking. Finally, he was able to fly back home.
Special Delivery: Hope
Elsie knows the struggles aren’t over. “His treatment is not yet finished,” she said. But she knows that Mercy Medical Angels and American Airlines will always be there to help Angel. He has already flown three round trips, to and from Shriners Hospital for Children, and will need more in the future.
Still, Mercy Medical Angels will continue to bring children like Angel a special delivery – hope. And when children and families have hope, they can find their wings.
