Charitable Flights Make Treatment Possible for Cancer Patient

Mercy Medical Angels makes treatment possible for cancer patient through charitable flights

Trials of Thyroid Cancer

“In January of 2021, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.”

So begins the story of Rhonda’s cancer battle. Rhonda started seeing an oncologist right away. They recommended surgery within a month. Unfortunately, the surgery only did so much – the cancer had since spread to her brain. The surgeon then removed the brain tumor. Not too long after, the oncologist noticed cancerous spots on Rhonda’s lungs.

And the battle was just beginning.

Obstacles on the Battlefield

Despite the treatments draining Rhonda’s energy, she persisted in her fight. Then she found out the cancer wouldn’t go away with standard treatments. She had to fly to MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. The trips had to happen every three to four months. The problem: MD Anderson is almost 1,300 miles away from Rhonda’s home in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

“Between my deductible and travel costs,” said Rhonda, “it was getting very expensive.” She added, “I will have to go back many times in addition to this trip.”

The long distance and financial burden were two more obstacles on an already difficult battlefield. But if she gave up the fight, she would die. How would Rhonda receive the care she needed?

Aid from Angels

Rhonda was beginning to run out of hope. That’s when angels flew to her aid – Mercy Medical Angels, that is! Through partnerships with The Hogan Foundation and Delta Airlines, Mercy Medical Angels made it possible for Rhonda to access treatment at MD Anderson.

“The application process was not complicated,” said Rhonda, “and everyone was very helpful!” She later said that her flight was “great.”

"We Are So Very Grateful...”

Rhonda’s oncologist recommended to keep traveling to MD Anderson for treatment and monitoring. She trusts that Mercy Medical Angels, The Hogan Foundation, and Delta Airlines will come through for her. Now, she can continue fighting – because she doesn’t have to go in alone.

“The transportation assistance increased my quality of life,” said Rhonda. “I wouldn’t have been able to receive the care I needed if it weren’t for Mercy Medical Angels.”

“We are so very grateful for your generosity and kindness!”
