Teacher Receives Organ Transplant

September 6, 2021

A Teacher's Trials

Malik lives just outside of Savannah, Georgia. She worked as a paraprofessional, helping disabled children to succeed in school. But in 2020, COVID-19 began to spread. Malik couldn’t go to work, and as the pandemic raged across the globe, she found herself out of a job. She applied for disability payments, which provided some income, but not much.

As if losing her job during the pandemic wasn’t enough, Malik had been suffering with short bowel syndrome for more than 20 years. This prevents her from absorbing nutrients from food. She needs nutritional infusions for 10 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to short bowel syndrome, she has fibromuscular dysplasia. It distorts the size of blood vessels, which can cause aneurisms.

Three Obstacles

The best option for Malik’s life to improve involved multiple organ transplants. But three major obstacles stood in her way. First, there was a long waiting list for the organs she needed. Second, an assessment was necessary before she could even get on the waiting list. Third, she would have to travel to and from Miami Transplant Institute – more than 430 miles away from her home. “There are no transplant centers that do multiple organ transplants in Georgia,” said Malik.

“I was unable to afford the cost of a commercial flight,” said Malik. She added, “Having the transplant assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic was extremely rough for me, financially.”

With all these obstacles in her path, how could Malik get to the care she needed?

Aid from Above

Right when things were looking bleak, Mercy Medical Angels entered Malik’s life. Mercy Medical Angels arranged round-trip flights on American Airlines. Malik didn’t have to pay a cent. Even though the transplant team took a while to send paperwork, she was still able to receive the flight. “The staff at Mercy Medical Angels were extremely patient with me.”

Malik especially thanks Shaila, one of the transportation coordinators at Mercy Medical Angels, for playing a critical part in making this possible. “Without her aid, I wouldn’t have been able to be assessed for the transplant, and finally get on the organ waiting list. Shaila helped me get on the path to transplant.”

She adds, “My flight was great.”

"You Are Real-Life Angels!"

Thanks to Mercy Medical Angels and American Airlines, Malik is on her way to health. Her quality of life is improving. She trusts that Mercy Medical Angels and American Airlines will continue to help her when it’s time to get the organ transplants. “I wouldn’t have been able to receive the care I needed if Mercy Medical Angels hadn’t provided transportation,” said Malik.

“Thank you – you are real-life angels!”
