Tatiana's Journey to Healing

September 17, 2020
Tatiana lives in Midlothian, Virginia. She and her family are low on resources, but they have a lot of love. Their ability to help Tatiana stay healthy was put to the test when she was diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

Obstacles to Healing

Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition that harms the red blood cells. Instead of being disk-shaped, the cells are deformed into a crescent, like the blade of a sickle. This shape decreases the cells’ ability to transport oxygen and other essential nutrients through the bloodstream, which can lead to life-threatening complications.

Resistance and Roadblocks

After Tatiana suffered from two strokes, her parents decided she needed surgery.  Sometimes a bone marrow transplant can help individuals who have sickle cell disease.

Tatiana received this surgery. However, the bone marrow transplant brought severe complications. “Her health was displaced for two and half years,” said Tatiana’s parents.

Her best shot at healing was at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD), located in Norfolk, Virginia. “The reason we have to travel is that Tatiana still needs to recover from the bone marrow transplant,” said Tatiana’s parents. “She still needs to go to appointments and is still fighting some things.”

There was only one problem. A round trip from Midlothian to Norfolk and back again covers a distance of more than 200 miles. Tatiana’s family couldn’t afford the cost of fuel to make these repeated long-distance trips.

Hope and Healing

That was when Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program raced to the rescue. They helped Tatiana’s parents pay for the trips  to CHKD by sending gas cards. “Getting to and from appointments is very costly,” said Tatiana’s parents, “but thanks to all of you, she is able to get there.”

Tatiana has a long road ahead of her. With the assistance from Mercy Medical Angels, she doesn’t have to travel it alone. “Our family is very grateful for your services,” said Tatiana’s parents.

Children like Tatiana often encounter roadblocks on the way to better health. But with help from Mercy Medical Angels and CHKD, children and families can continue their journey to healing.
