Fighting Neuroendocrine Cancer with Charitable Flights

July 5, 2022

Neuroendocrine Cancer Strikes

A few years ago, William started having health issues. His wife, Terri, began to worry, but doctors repeatedly dismissed her concerns.

“They kept saying he had food poisoning,” said Terri. However, she suspected it was more than that.

Then, a blood test confirmed her worries. William had neuroendocrine cancer.

Rising Costs

The cancer spread rapidly through William’s body, attacking his pancreas. He needed major surgery to remove it. After the operation, he had to stay in the hospital for a month.

“We save every penny just to keep a roof over our heads,” said Terri.

The surgery and hospital stays were expensive, and the cancer wouldn’t give up anytime soon. There had to be a better option for saving William’s life.

1,700 Miles to Treatment

When it comes to treating neuroendocrine cancer, Dr. Liu is one of the top specialists in the country. William contacted Dr. Liu and was able to get an appointment.

There was only one problem. Dr. Liu’s practice is in Denver, Colorado – over 1,700 miles away from William’s home. The round-trip tickets would be too costly. How could William access the treatment he needed?

Charitable Flights in His Corner

When cancer patients start losing hope for the fight, sometimes they pray for angels who will fly to their aid. And angels were definitely there for William – Mercy Medical Angels, that is!

Mercy Medical Angels and Delta Airlines teamed up to support William. The nonprofit provided charitable flights so he could travel to Denver.

“Mercy Medical Angels enabled us to get there,” said Terri, “which relieved our financial struggles.”

Eyes on the Prize

William’s fight with neuroendocrine cancer is far from over. He’s almost gone down a few times, but he’s not going out.

“William still has a lot of living to do.” said Terri. She and William trust that Mercy Medical Angels will make sure that happens through charitable flights.

Fighting neuroendocrine cancer is hard, and the disease won’t pull any punches. But with a strong corner, William is ready to win the next rounds.
