Charitable Ground Transportation Saves Cancer Patient

Cancer Catastrophe

Carolyn lives near Jackson, Mississippi. She worked in academics for many years. However, her life changed for the worse in 2014.

“I have had three cancers in seven years,” said Carolyn, “and one of them has no cure.” This caused her to lose her job, and she had to apply for unemployment. “I’m currently job searching,” said Carolyn, “but the gap in employment history makes it extremely difficult.”

Problems Pile Up

In addition to three cancers and losing her job, Carolyn couldn’t receive the care she needed in her home state. And the pandemic wasn’t making things any easier. “My area has some of the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates in the country,” she said.

With all these problems piling up, Carolyn decided to go to MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. “I needed to go somewhere else, better for care.” There was just one problem. MD Anderson was approximately 500 miles away from her home in Jackson, Mississippi. It seemed like Carolyn was truly stuck, with no way out.

Saving the Day

Luckily for Carolyn, she found out about Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program. Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program sent her a gas card, so she could drive to MD Anderson.

“They were incredibly helpful,” said Carolyn. She mentions that if she didn’t have the gas card, she wouldn’t have been able to afford the medical care she so desperately needed.

"I am very appreciative, every little bit helps!"

"I Hope My Story Can Help..."

Carolyn will need more assistance in the future. But she has hope that Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program will continue to help her. Although Carolyn is facing many battles, she isn’t about to give up.

“I hope my story can help,” said Carolyn, “because there are many others in my shoes who need travel assistance.” Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation program will continue to do just that – Delivering HOPE Daily to those who need it the most.
