Linsey lives in a small town in Alabama. She's married, has three kids, and also provides the main source of income for her family. It seemed to her family and friends that she could do just about anything. But that changed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2024.
The cancer started out as Stage 2. Doctors thought it could be handled with surgery and a few rounds of chemo. Unfortunately, after the surgery, Linsey got grim news. She had an infection, and chemo would have to wait. She had to take strong antibiotics before she could complete her treatment. By the time she finished antibiotics in early July, the cancer had spread and progressed to Stage 3. Her doctors also told her that the cancer could also spread to her skin and ovaries.
"I need weekly chemo treatments," said Linsey. "After I complete all the rounds of chemo, I will have radiation therapy, followed by possibly another surgery and several years of hormone therapy."
Linsey soon ran into another problem. She couldn't work anymore. Now she had to rely on disability payments and her savings. Money seemed to vanish. One of the biggest burdens of cost was gas for her car, which she needed to access her cancer treatments.
Not having enough money for transportation had become a matter of life and death. How would Linsey get to and from her critical medical appointments?
That was when Linsey found out about Mercy Medical Angels' ground transportation program. They sent her gas cards so that she could afford to drive to cancer treatment. This transportation assistance helped her maintain financial stability, and lifted the burden.
Despite her struggles, Linsey chooses to remain positive. She said that her battle with breast cancer has brought her family closer together.
"This has been an adventure for us all," said Linsey. Thanks to Mercy Medical Angels, she has support on that adventure - until she beats breast cancer.
