Still Have Questions?
Why do I have to pay taxes and fees for commercial flights?
Airline taxes and fees are mandatory government charges that cannot be waived or donated. They must be paid at the time of booking. These include TSA security fees, federal excise taxes and airport facility charges. These typically total $25-$55 per person each way. We cover the actual cost of your flight ticket (which is the largest expense), but these government-required fees must be paid by the passenger. We keep these costs as low as possible by booking the most economical flights available.
Who are the Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic volunteer pilots?
Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic volunteer pilots are FAA-certified pilots who donate their time, aircraft and fuel to fly patients to medical care. Many are retired commercial airline pilots, retired military pilots, experienced private pilots with 500+ hours and aviation professionals with a passion for helping others. All pilots must meet strict requirements including minimum flight hours, current medical certifications, appropriate insurance and regular aircraft inspections. Safety is always our top priority. Learn more about our pilots.
What states does Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic serve?
Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic serves patients across 11 states and Washington, D.C.: Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Delaware, Michigan, Ohio and Washington, D.C. If your medical appointment is within or between these states and meets the distance requirements (typically 200-475 miles one way, and in some cases up to 1,000 miles), you may qualify for an Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic private pilot flight.
What medical conditions do you serve?
We serve patients with a wide range of medical conditions and needs, including but not limited to cancer (all types and stages), heart and cardiovascular conditions, kidney disease and dialysis needs, organ transplant needs, neurological conditions, rare diseases and conditions, chronic illnesses requiring specialty care, orthopedic injuries and conditions, diabetes complications and mental health conditions requiring specialty treatment. If you're unsure whether your condition qualifies, submit a request. We're here to assist anyone who needs transportation to medical care.
What is Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic?
Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic (AFMA) is the volunteer pilot program operated by Mercy Medical Angels and one of our core services. Through AFMA, trained private pilots donate their time, aircraft and resources to fly patients to medical appointments at no cost. These flights help bridge the distance between patients and the specialized care they need. Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic serves residents of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Delaware, Michigan, Ohio and Washington, D.C. Our private pilots typically fly patients traveling between 200 and 475 miles, though in some cases, flights may extend up to 1,000 miles depending on need and availability.
