Sean was diagnosed with a brain tumor back in late 2022. He had just turned 30. Surgery was scheduled for a few days later to remove the brain tumor. Unfortunately, the surgery affected some of his functioning, causing him to have seizures. After eight days in the ICU, he was able to go home. Since the full tumor couldn't be surgically removed, Sean was told he would need chemo and radiation to get rid of whatever was left.
After surgery, radiation, and chemo, the tumor shrunk considerably. It got to the point where it was barely showing up on scans. But in April 2023, another scan showed bad news: the tumor was back with a vengeance. Sean was told that he could either continue to travel back and forth to the university hospital, or partake in clinical trials across the country. If he chose to do nothing, he would have less than one year to live.
"I didn't want to be used as a guinea pig," said Sean. He believed the doctors at the university hospital would take the best care of him. And he resolved to continue the fight for as long as he could.
The rising medical bills added to day-to-day expenses soon became overwhelming. On top of that, Sean was struggling to pay for the costs of driving to treatment. "I had to set up a Go Fund Me page," said Sean. The distance would be the death of him if he couldn't get help.
That was when Sean found out about Mercy Medical Angels. He applied for help, and was accepted. Mercy Medical Angels sent him gas cards. Now he could access the treatment he so desperately needed.
When asked to describe Mercy Medical Angels in one word, Sean opts for phrases. "Mercy Medical Angels has been a godsend," he said, "and greatly helpful in my fight." Sean has a long journey ahead of him, but at least he's not walking alone - Mercy Medical Angels is there, until he gets rid of the brain tumor for good.
