Hannah: Discovering New Hope

February 3, 2021

Hannah's Home

Hannah lives in Mississippi with her family. Her home state is famous for historical sites, such as locations of Civil War battles. It has been dubbed “Birthplace of America’s Music” - blues, country, and rock n’ roll all had their start here. The mouth of the Mississippi River adds natural beauty to the state.

But Hannah’s life isn’t a smooth roll on the river. It’s more like trying to navigate rapids on a log raft. For almost five years, she has suffered from multiple chronic conditions.

Flood of Problems

“Hannah has a very rare genetic mutation,” said Hannah’s mother, Heather. “It causes her chronic diseases.” Some of these include migraines, vision loss, hearing difficulties, and endometriosis. It also causes mastocytosis, or abnormal buildups of white blood cells. Mastocytosis can lead to organ damage, severe pain, anemia, and other serious complications.

Worse, Hannah cannot find the care she needs in her home state. “She has to travel multiple times a year to undergo experimental treatments,” said Heather. These treatments are often in bigger cities; trips are expensive. To make matters worse, Heather had to resign from teaching to take care of Hannah, which drastically decreased the family income.

“Her medical expenses are astronomical,” said Heather, “and we simply don’t have any resources to travel.” But without traveling, Hannah cannot receive the care she desperately needs.

Flying to the Rescue

New Paragraph

The best option for Hannah was an experimental treatment in California. There was just one problem: her family had no way to pay for long-distance tickets.

At a critical point, Hannah’s family found out about Mercy Medical Angels. Mercy Medical Angels flew to the rescue, arranging and paying for round-trip flights to California.

Hannah flew to California with her mother. Once there, Hannah received the care she needed. Then, she flew back home to Mississippi.

Reflecting Hope

When asked what she would say to potential donors, Heather thinks of how Hannah is doing better every day. “As a child with lifelong illnesses, Hannah faces many obstacles. Mercy Medical Angels gave us the means to fly to California. We couldn’t have done it without your help.”

When a child faces multiple rare diseases, hopelessness often rushes in like a flood. But with help from Mercy Medical Angels, children like Hannah can stay afloat. And when their lives improve, the journey is easier – like a smooth-flowing river, reflecting the light of healing and hope.
