Cynthia Lives Beyond the Limits

September 9, 2020

Sudden Limit

Cynthia is a high school student. Like most teenagers, she has big dreams for her future. Her biggest dream is to attend veterinary school and help animals. But when she was 15, Cynthia’s life hit a sudden limit.

“I went on a trip with my AP History class,” said Cynthia, “and when I returned, I felt tired all the time.” Her parents took her to the doctor. The resulting diagnosis turned Cynthia’s life upside-down: cancer. In addition to cancer, she also developed problems with lymphatic drainage in her face and neck.

Just like that, Cynthia’s future went from bright to bleak.

Shattered Dreams...

Cancer stole Cynthia’s energy. She needed multiple rounds of cancer treatment and scans, which made her fatigue even worse. On top of that, she had to move from Alaska to Northern Idaho. The move brought her closer to family. It also brought her closer to the treatment she needed at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. It was still more than 1,200 miles one way.

Cynthia’s dreams for the future were shattered. She didn’t know if she would live to experience her high school graduation. Every day was a battle to survive.

…Put Back Together

Right when Cynthia’s life was nearing its limit, Mercy Medical Angels flew in. A partnership with the Hogan Foundation paid for round-trip tickets between her home and Mayo Clinic.

Cynthia is able to focus on healing. Better yet, the cancer is now on its way out. And her once-shattered dreams are slowly reassembling.

"Kindness, Compassion, and Generosity"

Cynthia is now seventeen. She knows she’ll live to see her graduation day, and many days after. Her dreams are becoming reality once more.

“I would not be here today if it was not for the kindness, compassion, and generosity of Mercy Medical Angels!”  She added, “You all are my true angels!”

When teenagers like Cynthia battle cancer, Mercy Medical Angels helps them live beyond the limits!
