Cancer Patient Receives Treatment, Thanks to Free Gas Cards

September 15, 2022

Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer

Soledad lives in Hickory, North Carolina. She has been married for 9 years and is a mother of two boys. She had her entire life ahead of her – or so she thought. In 2019, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer.

“My family was so shocked,” said Soledad.

Roadblocks to Treatment

Every week, Soledad drives to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for her treatment. “I go through chemotherapy treatments once a week,” said Soledad, “and small surgical procedures every three months.”

There’s just one problem. Driving to and from her treatment spans approximately 140 miles. Soledad can’t work, so she doesn’t have much money for gas. But if she couldn’t drive to treatment, ovarian cancer would kill her. If that happened, her family – and future – would be left behind.

How would Soledad continue her treatment?

Mercy Medical Angels Races to The Rescue

When the situation seems dim, sometimes angels shine a light of hope. In this case, the hope came from Mercy Medical Angels! Mercy Medical Angels’ program for ground transportation sent gas cards to Soledad. This covered the cost of driving to and from cancer treatment.

“I am very blessed and grateful to have this opportunity, to get this help,” said Soledad. “It makes my life a little better, where I get just a little bit less stress.” And with less stress, Soledad can focus on treatment – and hopefully, going into remission.

"I Can't Find the Words..."

Soledad is doing much better now. The treatments are going as planned, thanks to the gas cards. When asked about how Mercy Medical Angels’ ground transportation helped her, Soledad chokes up with emotion.

“I can’t find the words to explain how much I’d like to thank you. Without you, I wouldn’t be able to make it to my treatment. Thank you so much for helping me.”
