Our volunteer pilots are “angels” providing non-emergency medical transportation to specialized medical care centers. Many patients cannot afford transportation costs to one-time or regular visits to long-distance healthcare. Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic fills the gap.

For more than 50 years, Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic volunteer pilots have provided air transportation services to thousands of patients, from children to seniors plus their caretakers, enabling these patients access to long- distant healthcare.
Make a lasting difference in a patient’s life.
For Patients who can’t afford air transportation to long-distance health or clinical care, your support provides an opportunity for a healthy future.
To request assistance with air transportation, apply by filling out our online application below. We’ll work with you to provide the needed resources for flying to your health provider.
Your request will be directed to a Transportation Coordinator, who will help you access our charitable transportation services.
Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic must limit its services to assist children and adults who cannot afford any means of long-distance transportation as our volunteer pilots donate their time and absorb all flight expenses. Our mission is to help ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances, therefore appointment verification, approved medical clearance and financial income verification are required.
Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic (AFMA) recipients must answer several health questions in order for Transportation Coordinators to assess their fitness for flight in an unpressurized aircraft. If the answers to any of these questions causes concern for the Transportation Coordinators, written permission for the flight must be obtained from the passenger’s physician. No one will be transported if they have a readily communicable disease. Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic passengers must be considered outpatients. If a passenger requires supplemental oxygen, he or she must provide the oxygen, and it must have a tag confirming the tank is DOT approved. Passengers are responsible for their own medications. Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic pilots are not trained in medical emergencies, and are unable to provide any medical assistance. Once the patient application is approved, a Transportation Coordinator coordinates travel dates with the passenger and volunteer pilots based on total weight and routing of the flight.
The aircraft flown by our volunteers have 4 to 6 seats (includes seats for pilot and copilot) and very little space for baggage. Although the cabin is comfortable, weight and space are limited. Passengers must provide their accurate weight, height and weight of carry-on items. Safety is our highest priority. It is important to have alternative travel options in the event a flight is delayed or cancelled due to technical or weather challenges. AFMA is unable to guarantee air transportation.
Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic does not certify the pilots or the aircraft used for Angel Flights. This is the responsibility of the Federal Aviation Administration. Once flight coordination is fulfilled, the pilot in command (PIC) is responsible for all final details regarding the flight. If, for any reason the pilot and/or passenger is not comfortable with the match, they may contact our office, and we will try to suggest an alternative.
